Budget 2009 Reactions - Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, India

Dear Sir

Please find enclosed the statement for immediate dissemination from Dr.
Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, India.

Dr. Prathap C. Reddy

Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, India

"The Hon'ble Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, has made an extensive
exercise towards inclusive growth and given an outlay for the largest budget
since Independence. This will certainly lift India out of recession and
stimulate growth / domestic demand.

Education and Health are mentioned as a priority and measures of increasing
the outlays for rural and urban healthcare have been outlined. The reduction
of customs duty on cancer and cardiac drugs and instruments is also welcome.

I believe the big potential in encouraging private healthcare to build
much-needed one hundred thousand hospital beds for the next 10 years and
significantly enhance health human resources by putting up more colleges and
training institutes would have greatly enhanced the national objective. The
health sector can then become the largest employment provider with an
addition of 2 million jobs per year for the next decade. It would have also
automatically increased the GDP and achieved the national goal of 9 - 10%
growth. But the essential first step was to include Healthcare as
Infrastructure, thus providing the necessary stimulus for investment and
growth.

While we compliment the Finance Minister on the tremendous exercise he has
done in presenting the Rs. 10 lakh crore budget, I sincerely hope the
Government will look at the multiplier effect health can bring to the
nation!"

Thanks & Regards,

Vishnuram M
